We Aussies treat our furry friends more like family. And rightfully so! Their unconditional love really is the ultimate feeling.

And like we do with every other family member, Christmas is the perfect time to treat them, too.

We’ve got some deliciously purrrr-fect recipes that will make your pets barking mad this Christmas season!

Preheat your oven to 180°C/ 160°C Fan/ gas 4.

Mix all the ingredients together to make a dough, making sure everything is well combined. If the mixture is too dry, add a small amount of water.

Put some flour onto your surface and roll the dough until it’s ½ inch thick.

Cut out the dough using a Christmas tree or other Christmassy shaped biscuit cutter.

Place in the oven for 30 minutes or until the biscuits are hard to the touch.

Mash the banana and mix in the egg, honey and peanut butter.

Add flour, oats and baking powder and stir until thoroughly combined.

Mix in the water, a small amount at a time.

Divide the mix between six cupcake cases (12 for smaller furry friends), and place in the oven for 15-20 minutes or until golden brown

Leave to cool thoroughly and remove the pupcakes from their cases.

Coat the top of each pupcake with a teaspoon of cream cheese or Greek yogurt.

How Vinnies can help spread joy for you and your community this Christmas https://www.iga.com.au/iga-community/vinnies-declutter-and-donate/ Thu, 07 Dec 2023 05:39:01 +0000 https://www.iga.com.au/?post_type=communityposts&p=49285 The post How Vinnies can help spread joy for you and your community this Christmas appeared first on IGA Supermarkets.

Christmas is a time of love, laughter and indulgence, and it’s right around the corner! And for families with kids, it also means plenty of new toys filling the home.

This year, IGA and our charitable partner Vinnies Australia, continue to work together to brighten the season for Australians. Because with a small act that’s a tonne of fun, we can make sure that your old toys keep bringing joy to Aussie kids in 2024!

So follow along and find out how decluttering and donating your much loved toys can make your Christmas (and everyone else’s) as joyous as possible.

What is decluttering

Simply put, decluttering is the process of looking at what you’ve got in your home and deciding which stuff you want to keep and which to get rid of.

How to do it

Simple really. Just follow our quick tips!

1. Rally the kids

Enlist family members to help! You can go through old toys, laugh and reminisce, and give them the nice moment to decide what they’re ready to have someone else love.

2. Sort, sort, sort!

In your chosen room, get 3 sections ready to sort, group and pile your items.

Section 1: For items that you still want to keep.

Section 2: For items to be donated.

Section 3: For items that need to go.

3. Take the leap

Grab your piles and commit! Put back the stuff you’re keeping, throw out what needs to go and head to your local Vinnies.

As a proud partner of Vinnies Australia, we can all help make someone else’s Christmas amazing by donating items and making sure they’re continued to be loved. All that with the added bonus of also doing your bit to encourage the reusability of products and reducing landfills!

And lastly

We know decluttering can be hard. So if you prefer to help in other ways, check out the Vinnie’s Christmas baubles available in IGA. Buying a bauble helps support Aussies who are struggling to pay basic expenses like food, bills and rent this holiday season.

Merry Decluttered Christmas, everyone!

Christmas is a time of giving. It’s a time of sharing, and it’s a time to eat great food with family and friends.

Knowing what to get someone for Christmas can often be a hard task, and sometimes even expensive.

Do-It-Yourself Hampers are a great way to give a gift that is personal, tailored to whoever is receiving it, and you can determine the budget you want to spend.

There are many different options out there with what to include in a hamper. You can also check out 8 sustainable guilt-free gift ideas on our page here.

IGA is a network of 1,300 independent family-owned businesses that sit at the heart of local communities across Australia. Independence makes all the difference for these businesses and for our customers and local communities. Free from having to follow a one size fits all mantra, IGA independent owners not only understand local needs, but go out of their way to support local producers, suppliers, and charities wherever possible.

That’s why we love the idea of creating a hamper that gives AND gives back. It’s a double gift hamper!

You can give back to the community by purchasing Community Co products. Community Co proudly support local communities and suppliers through the Community Chest Program. Top tips to spread the love within your community this Valentine’s Day https://www.iga.com.au/iga-community/top-tips-to-spread-the-love-within-your-community-this-valentines-day/ Wed, 25 Jan 2023 00:36:03 +0000 https://www.iga.com.au/?post_type=communityposts&p=31773 The post Top tips to spread the love within your community this Valentine’s Day appeared first on IGA Supermarkets.

Valentine’s day doesn’t need to be just about that one special someone. Why not spread the love even further this month and treat your community to some v-day sweetness. Here are a few thought starters…

Get baking!

No-one can turn down something sweet on Valentine’s Day and our Chocolate Beetroot Cupcakes are the perfect, healthy alternative! For a loving surprise, make a batch of these and drop them off at the doorsteps of people around your community, or go one step further and hold a local bake sale in the theme of red, pink and white.

Get crafty!

Nothing says I love you like something handmade. Spend some time getting creative, whether it be crafting a hand-written letter, framed photo or friendship bracelet and surprise someone who makes your community, workplace, or school a better place.

Get social!

Find your best pink and red clothing pieces and spread the V-day spirit by organising a community walk or get together. This is the perfect opportunity to share some neighbourly love, all whilst getting to know the people that make your community so special.

Get helpful!

This Valentine’s day, consider offering a helping hand to someone in your community who may need it. Whether it be an elderly member who can’t quite carry their groceries or perhaps the neighbour, who needs some help getting their garden up to scratch!

Finally, a reminder to spread the love within your community not only this Valentine’s day, but on all days!

To celebrate a century of Cadbury bringing people together through a love of chocolate, we invited people to nominate someone deserving of recognition for their act of kindness. Each month from May – September 2022, we are selecting 20 pairs of lucky winners.

Cheryl Capon

I'd like to nominate my daughter's primary school grade 1 teacher for this amazing prize. She truly goes above and beyond for every one of her students but most importantly, she is inclusive of everyone she meets and makes them feel so supported and motivates them to learn every single day. I'd like to thank her for helping my daughter become such a compassionate and intelligent student. All teachers are great but Cheryl is amazing.

Karen Trevorrow

Being a mother of 4, working full time hours and always making sure the kids come first, Karen is a 'Supermum' in my books. At work she is efficient, understanding and caring, always thinking ahead. She also loves chocolate!

Ann Clarke

Ann is a local unsung hero. Along with volunteering tirelessly behind the scenes for our local sporting club, Ann quietly delivers delicious meals and deserts to so many locals in their time of need. It is an honour to know her and I would love her compassionate generosity to be recognised.

Narelle Pfieffer

Narelle is so caring & community minded towards people of all walks of life, young & old. I believe she is the clergy at the high school & has a swap garden stall in her front yard for whomever needs plants or goods to share. Such a lovely calming influence to whomever she meets, that is the way that I see her. A valued member of our community & she would share her gift if she were chosen.

Stephen Lowe

Steve is a beautiful soul who is the back bone of our senior community. Over the years he has been a godsend to me and other neighbours who don't have family or local support. His many talents include handyman, appliance repairer, appointment driver, shopping support, water blaster, pet carer and so on. Too many to mention and all done without expecting anything in return. It's such a comfort to know he's in the background. I would love to see him recognised and appreciated for all that he does.

Heather Newton

Heather is the most selfless, hardworking and strong woman I've ever come across. Not only does she work as a carer for elderly people in the neighbourhood, care for her 96 year old mother and volunteer at the local athletics club, she also has 6 kids of her own. She's always the first to put up her hand to help others, no matter what she's got going on in her own life. Her generosity is an inspiration to all who are blessed to know her!

Alison Jones

Alison, my mum, my best friend - the most generous and giving person to know. She visits my nana who is in a nursing home multiple times a week. Even if nana doesn't know who she is, she sits there for hours on end and talks to her. She brings her washing home so that her clothes don't go missing. She hangs nanas clothes in sets so that she always looks her best. And then she goes above and beyond to collect gifts and prizes for the nursing home to use all while continuing to work every morning.

Holly Whitman

Holly is the most selfless, generous person I know. No issue is too big or too small, she will always help, whether it be offering you a job when in need, wiping away tears, sending care hamper packages or being a free counsellor. She is a true ride or die.

Mel Newton

My beautiful friend Mel is a breath of fresh air. She works hours of unpaid overtime in the hospital to go above and beyond for her patients. In her free time, she's often volunteering at charity stores and events, and often shops for the elderly neighbours and walks their dogs when they are unwell. Her selfless nature is truly incredible and inspirational!

Ray McGeary

Ray deserves to win as he has been a support and rock through tough times. His adminartion to put his needs aside for others. He has helped my girls, listened unconditionally and helped his community out too. He is a humble genuine guy who has the biggest heart, he is well deserving of this prize to say thank you for being you.

Mark Murdoch

Mark has always put others before himself. He has volunteered in Community Radio and has worked as a financial officer for a community group. He helps anyone who asks. He never expects anything in return. All who know him, love and respect him. It is a privilege to know him.

Peter Dumcombe

Peter is a wonderful giving person. He has a full time job but continues to give to his community and state by being a volunteer with the state emergency service and RSL. He does this with care and commitment to those in need, without seeking recognition.

Naomi Barton

Naomi is the most selfless person I know! Always ready to help anyone she possibly can all while taking care of her three kids. She is absolutely amazing and I am so grateful for her! I've recently been through major surgeries and she took on my two kids also with out any hesitation. I'd be lost with out her and unfortunately I'm not in a place to give anything to thank her so this would be wonderful! Thank you.

Tanya Utia

If you're looking for someone who is generous, kind-hearted, and always puts others first, then look no further than my mum, Tanya! She deserves to win this prize. She is the most generous person I know! Her selfless nature has shaped me and I am forever grateful (I love you, Mum).

Russell Jeffreys

Russell, along with partner, Nat, are neighbours you could only dream of having. Nothing is ever too hard, and they are always finding ways to help the community. Problem with a leak? They'll investigate (and fix)! Daughter in hospital? They'll feed the pets and make sure everything is sorted. Need a spare pair of hands? They'll be there! Hard week because of medical crises or anything else? Expect a meal waiting at their table for you or delivered to the door step if getting out is too hard.

Maura Duffy

My nanna, Maura, greets everyone she meets with the warmest smile as she has the biggest heart, full of love and kindness. She is very busy caring for her family, including her adult son with special needs. However, you would never know as she faces each day with joy and positivity.

Jason Fa’ata’ape

Jason supports many members of the community as a friend, colleague and church member. He collects donated furniture from homes and organises for this to be given to refugee families and families in need. He gives up so much personal time to help people in need and somehow always manages to rally a team of people including family members and friends to give up their time regularly to support those around him, even strangers. He's the kindest, most caring person who deserves to be acknowledged.

Justin Heta

Justin is a full-time carer for both his elderly parents and young daughter. He does such an amazing, selfless job looking after everyone and supporting them all. He makes sure everyone is at their appointments and juggling school and home chores, he deserves a reward for all he does. Thank you.

Darcie Hutchinson

Darcie is an amazing friend and I am so lucky to have her. Always there for me and my boys, and always helps out whenever I need. Being a single mum is tough but friends like her make it so much easier.

Kathryn Edwards

Kath lives in a Retirement Village and will help to look out for a neighbour who has memory loss, making sure they eat everyday and drive them to appointments and shopping in her own time. She also takes them to Mass every Sunday. She also helps new residents who move in, if they are feeling like they need a friend, she will call past to say 'hello' and make them feel welcome.

Michelle Wright

Michelle deserves to win as she is a delightful and kind hearted friend, wife, mother and teacher. She works so hard and passionately to create a welcoming environment for her students. COVID has definitely changed everyone's lives but it has taken a significant toll mentally and physically to her and her family. She needs a little bit of good this month to make her smile. Her favourite chocolate is also Cadbury.

To celebrate a century of Cadbury bringing people together through a love of chocolate, we invited people to nominate someone deserving of recognition for their act of kindness. Each month from May – September 2022, we are selecting 20 pairs of lucky winners.

Michelle Spicer

Michelle is generous to her neighbours, family and friends. If any neighbour calls for help, she willingly obliges. Every Christmas she makes her neighbours a plate of biscuits. Michelle has a heart that freely helps anyone in need ie. a meal to someone not well. Michelle helped her sister out when she couldn't raise her twin babies. Michelle, her husband and their 4 children brought the premature twins home to raise. Seven years later she is still doing a wonderful job raising them.

Cheryle Greene

Since retiring last year, Cheryl spends most of her time helping friends and family. From cooking up meals and treats to being taxi service for those who need a lift and helping out at the football and netball clubs for her grandchildren. When friends and neighbours are sick, Cheryl is the first one to come to their aid. Cheryl works harder in retirement than she did when she was working full time. Thank you Cheryl!

Laura

Laura runs a coffee shop where she is always actively helping and working with the community. She probably gives away more coffee than she sells. She wears her heart on her sleeve and nothing is too much trouble. She has a heart of gold and would do anything for anyone. She is such a deserving and genuine soul who works tirelessly for her community, donating her time and raising money for those in need.

Nadia Lellie

Miss Lellie is my daughter's pre-school teacher and always goes above and beyond for her students. She has made my daughter's transition to school such a wonderful experience and even walked with her on her first day of after school care and stayed with her to make sure she was settled in and feeling confident.

Jess Belle

My friend is a humble and hardworking soul who continually goes above and beyond to help others. She spends hours of her time each week doing things such as volunteering at the soup kitchen, collecting rubbish and taking elderly neighbours bins out. She does it out of the goodness of her heart and never expects recognition or anything in return. She inspires me to be better!

Judy Cook

My friend Judy Cook is an amazing partner, grandma, mother sister and friend to so many. She has many health issues herself but still puts everyone else first. Even when she is in pain. She drives miles to give you a hug when you're down, she drives miles to take her grand children to sports etc. She recently lost her Grandson in an accident but was a rock to her family. She is there whenever I need her. She is one in a million. Thank you

Sarah Simon

Sarah is completely selfless. A busy single mother of 2 young boys, who also runs her own book keeping business. She puts everyone else first. If someone needs a hand Sarah is there to help. She will make soup for sick people, drop off a tray of donuts on the door step of someone just to cheer them up etc. It's the little things that can make a huge difference in someone's life. Sarah deserves a nice surprise!

Tim Kirby

Tim is a fantastic neighbour! We are a retired couple and much to our surprise when we moved in a year ago, Tim started mowing our large nature strip. He has progressed to doing beautiful edgings and spraying weeds, all for nothing and very regularly! He is always there with a handy tool of sorts to help us out with odd jobs. He keeps and eye on our place when we are away, and all for the love of being a great neighbour which I am sure we all would like to see more of!

Jeff Barrington

Jeff is the most caring, passionate person i know. He always puts others first. Everyday he does a nice gesture towards a stranger. His moto in life is 'one act of kindness a day makes the world a better place'. He always looks out for the elderly in our community and will stop to help anyone. He volunteers in the SES, he is in the fire and rescue NSW and Army Reserves. His whole life is dedicated to helping others.

Carey Blaik

Carey runs a great not for profit organisation for people living with mental health issues. She is caring and kind and goes above and beyond for the people that visit her service. Carey is one of the rare ones that provides a service, not for financial gain.

Sherry Datta

Sherry is just one of those amazing people who lights up your day! She is constantly checking on her friends, being an amazing mum, and helping people around her. She is involved in her school communities, and genuinely cares about people!

Jan Douglas

Jan is a warm friendly neighbour who treats everyone with warmth and kindness. She will often retrieve our rubbish bins from the nature strip after being emptied and wheel them into our front garden without any hesitation. All the more considerate as she is in her eighties! I know she also quietly assists others in the street too, whether it be a rubbish bin return or a friendly chat.

Peter Dumcombe

Peter is a wonderful giving person. He has a full time job but continues to give to his community and state by being a volunteer with the state emergency service and RSL. He does this with care and commitment to those in need, without seeking recognition

Kristen Roder

Kristen was hands-on during the tragic Lismore NSW floods working tirelessly scrubbing & sanitising our Sth Lismore home that had been inundated with 4ft deep filthy, unhygienic floodwater. Her for-thought to come prepared with mops, buckets, & sponges and cleaning vinegar was very much appreciated & a godsend. She also supplied home-cooked meals on a daily basis & stocked our freezer with 3wks worth of home-cooked meals before returning home. Her caring ways sustained us & restored our faith.

Mark Gillis

Mark is the the most incredible person to have ever braced this planet. His selflessness and compassion seems to be limitless. If there's ever a struggle or a problem, he is always there to help. This man's kindness and empathy that exudes his heart, seems to spread like wildfire to all of those around him, inspiring them to try and be better people, taking the time to improve both themselves and inspire change in the community.

Sharon Whiteis

Sharon & her 11 yo son Caleb started 'Calebs Community Kindness Cupboard' in Glenwood NSW. They stock food donations in their garden pantry, where locals come and help themselves. Sharon also works tirelessly packing weekly food hampers. She gathers donations from local businesses & packs food hampers that she gives to families in need. They help many families every day, moreso during Covid lockdowns. I would love Sharon & Caleb to win an IGA thank you hamper!

Samira Liban

Samira is a wonderful addition to our community. Through various charity organisations she helps deliver anything we need, whether it's food or a helping hand. Even the odd cheeky chocolates here and there. We are so grateful to have her, especially during Covid times, as a lot of us are still unable to be out and about. I do hope she wins and thank you for this initiative.

Danielle Dolinski

Danielle is the kindest person you will ever meet. She is a mum of 4 beautiful kids with the best manners. We moved in next door to them almost 2 years ago and they have become our closest friends. I have also recently become a first time mum and she has been absolutely amazing and would do anything to help. Danielle also has a huge love for Cadbury chocolate and so do I! What else do you snack on when you're up all hours of the night feeding a baby!

Teresa Jones

Teresa is a tireless volunteer, fund raising and advocating for cancer services here in Bendigo. Her acts of generosity have had a great impact on our community for decades, and will continue for years to come.

Michelle Chaplin

In the recent flood Michelle's house went under, she lost everything and is in the process of rebuilding on her own, with limited help. On top of this she is backwards and forwards between both her daughters houses, helping them fix their properties up and if it's not that, she's helping out babysitting her grandkids. This woman is always on the go. Such a hard working woman who gives everything to everyone else. She definitely deserves recognition for her generosity and giving so much.

Betty Breeze

Betty goes above, beyond and even further to help out anyone and everyone. She is a strong advocate for community values and the biggest driver of our local community events. If you need help young, old or indifferent she is there. She may not be as young as she used to or as physically able but she will always find another way to support and encourage others. If you need a job done or a cake baked then she's your lady - and really she's just a bloody good all round bird.

Donna Church

Donna makes these beautiful dolls for our charity. She has designed the dolls and makes all the clothes for them. The heartwarming fact about these dolls is that they come in all coloured skin tones - one recipient put the doll next to her skin and said "look these dolls are the same as me" - a big deal for a little girl. These dolls are all donated to us free of charge, bringing smiles to those children in need is all the payment she receives. Please see Sewing for Charity WA to see her dolls.

At IGA, we’re all about caring for and supporting our local communities. Not only is the physical health of the people within our communities and network important, we want to encourage our local communities to look out for each other and raise awareness about the importance of taking the time to ask, ‘are you OK?’.

R U OK? Day is just around the corner, a day of national action and a reminder that every day can be a day to check in with your friends, family and colleagues. This year, R U OK? Day is on the 8th of September and should remind us all that we already have what it takes to support those we care for.

How to start the conversation

Whether it’s your neighbour, someone you know locally, or someone close to you, asking, ‘are you OK?’ is one of the simplest things you can do to support the people you care about through life’s ups and downs. You don’t need to be an expert to reach out, research[1] shows that listening and giving someone your time might be just what they need to help them through.

If you’re concerned about someone close to you, here are four steps to help you have a conversation that could change a life:

  1. Ask R U OK? – It helps to be friendly, relaxed and authentic. Help the person start talking by asking a question like “What’s been happening lately?” or mention specific things that have made you concerned for them, like “You seem less chatty than usual. How are you going?”
  2. Listen with an open mind – Listen to what the other person is saying and acknowledge what they have said when the time is right. Explain you’ve understood them and reassure them you’re always there to listen, whenever they want to talk.
  3. Encourage action – Ask them what they have done in the past to help them in this situation. Ask: “What’s something you can do for yourself right now? Something that’s enjoyable or relaxing?” If they’ve been feeling really down for more than two weeks, encourage them to see a health professional. Be positive about the role of professionals in getting through tough times.
  4. Check in – Remind yourself to check in with the person again in a couple of weeks or sooner if you are concerned. Stay in touch with them and remind them that you’re there for them. Them knowing this can make a huge difference.

Remember, no qualifications are needed to ask R U OK? and your conversation could change a life. Visit ruok.org.au for more advice, support and resources to help you have an R U OK? conversation.

To celebrate a century of Cadbury bringing people together through a love of chocolate, we invited people to nominate someone deserving of recognition for their act of kindness. Each month from May – September 2022, we are selecting 20 pairs of lucky winners.

Dave Quillam

Because Dave very kindly donated a wheelbarrow to Malanda Girl Guides so that we can use it as a vessel to make a big Fathers Day hamper to raffle off. We are trying to raise money for some of our girls to attend a Jamboree in Victoria next year. The generosity of local community minded people like Dave from Malanda Rural Supplies allows us to do this.

Damien Steward

Damien is our neighbour and he and his partner are very kind and generous. I am a lollipop lady at a local school and Damien will often pick up my son for me from his school. My son has autism and when plans change it can be problematic. Damien is very patient and kind to him and never hestitates to pick Jason up for me when I am called to work on short notice. He is also a great person and an awesome neighbour. Thank you, Damien.

Lynne Nott

Lynne has worked tirelessly for the Community Theatre for over 50 years, never expecting to be thanked although appreciated by many. I know she would be grateful for this surprise gift. Thank You.

Heather Prowd

Heather is always willing to help me out, no questions asked. She was especially helpful when I had a very serious accident. Nothing was a trouble to her. She looks after everything for my husband and I if ever we need her. She is a wonderful friend and I treasure our friendship.

Wendy Howard

Wendy walks twice a day with her dog Maggie around Kangaroo Flat area where she lives. Wendy is often saving wildlife that she may find injured while walking, and helping people in our Community and offering support to her neighbours. She also volunteers at our local Salvation Army. Wendy is a people person and I am privileged to be known as one of her best friends.

Jan Kennedy

Jan is a fantastic and very thoughtful neighbour who always does all the little things for you, and nothing is a problem for her and is always there. She helps keep our small street together and in touch with each other.

Michelle Fiegert

My mum, Michelle, is the most selfless person I know. She is forever offering her services to those who need it. She is always first person to volunteer at her local church, grandkids school or her own organisations. When there is even a hint of someone feeling unwell, had a baby or suffered a loss, there is a care package waiting for them from Mum. Lasagne or quiche, a tin of freshly baked biscuits, home made jam or fresh produce from her garden. She makes biscuits for the local coffee shop too.

Jodie Huttunen

This mum is amazing, so kind and thoughtful to everyone. She makes such wonderful things to take to her family sports, always sharing suprises on special days, making goods for the trading table - she just loves helping everyone. With 4 teenagers you can imagine how flat out she is but never complains. ONE IN A MILLION. It would be lovely to give her a surprise back. Thank you.

Danielle Marino

If it wasn't for Danielle, our community would not be as tight and close as we are. Danielle always holds every get together at her house and accomodates for everyone. Whether it be a feed or a bed to sleep in. Danielle is a beautiful kind soul, who would do absolutely anything for anyone.

Joanne Butler

A wonderful lady JoJo, who volunteers in our local community at the age of 60 has volunteered 3 times a week for over 4 years to prepare and cook ready made meals and yummy lemon myrtle biscuits. This is the total of over 40 thousands seperate meals to people in the community. Amazing work! We love JoJo and this is a great way to say thank you.

Georgina Phatouros

She is 87 and lives on her own. When she cooks, she cooks for 25 people and shares her love with the entire street upon which she lives. She is known as the Leonora Street legend.

Melanie Bergin

Puts everyone before herself. Her life is caring for other people as both a single parent and an aged care worker. Doing home care, she has improved the quality of life of so many people. It would be nice to win this for her. I know it would mean a lot.

Te-neale Brown

My friend deserves to win because she is a support teacher at Milton Public School and is also studying to become a full-time teacher. She is in the local fire brigade too. She drives every second weekend to get her step-daughter after working for all day at school. She is there to help anyone who needs it. My friend is truly a great person.

Zoe Adshead

My lovely middle child works exceptionally hard, long hours as a recently graduated registered nurse but always find time to care for colleagues animals when needed. We are so very proud of the caring young professional she has become.

Ruth Kenny

During the time my husband and I had Covid, my friend Ruth made sure my young pre-primary aged child had a lift to and from school every day so she wouldn't miss out! She also dropped goodies and activities for the kids when they were in isolation. She also has 3 young kids under 5, I've never been so grateful for my community!

Kenneth Farrell

Ken has been a bus driver for service and school runs. I feel all drivers have done an amazing job getting kids to and from school, before, during and after Covid. He gets up at 4am every work day and has done so for over 25 yrs rain hail or shine!

Francine Narrier

I would like to nominate my neighbour, Francine. When my partner and I first moved to the small country town of Moora we did not know a single person... That was until our lovely, elderly Indigenous neighbour Francine welcomed us to her community with open arms, introducing us to both her friends and family. Thanks to Francine's time, kindness and generosity we have met fantastic people from all ages and with such culturally diverse backgrounds.

Sharni Cameron

Sharni gives so much of her time for our local AFL Club. Even though she works full-time, she also runs the clubs canteen, all the events and does the fundraising. We have so few volunteers and Sharni keeps putting her hand up. She helps everyone she can and is always first to arrive, last to leave and often with more than her own children. She is an exceptional person who always puts others first.

Elisabeth Poulton

She is an incredible person with a heart of gold. If someone needs help she is at the forefront willing to do whatever is needed. Her support over many years both financial and personal for her friends and family has drawn praise from many area's. This lady will be with you in a flash if you need her. She would go to then ends of the earth for anyone in need.

Read our interview with Catherine Hill

At IGA, we care about our local communities and supporting locals in need. That’s why we’re supporting the release of SOME HAPPY DAY, and encourage you to do so, too! The main objective of the film, which is written, directed and produced by Catherine Hill, is to humanise homelessness so it’s understood and seen as more than just a number. We’ve interviewed director, Catherine Hill for further information and insight into the making of the film.

5 minutes with Catherine Hill

Q: As the writer, director, and producer of SOME HAPPY DAY, what would you most like for people to take away from this film?

A: I hope people are moved by our story and enjoy the film. I’d love for people to connect to the characters in the film and their different stories.

I’m hoping this film inspires deeper thinking about the world we live in and the people in our local communities who are surviving without a home. This can then lead to changes in the way we think and act, and inspire individual and community action to help address homelessness.

Q: From your experience as a caseworker for many years, how has your experience impacted the making of this film and the actors starring in it?

A: I’ve been privileged to work with men and women who have experienced unfortunate challenges and are homeless because of that. I’m continually inspired by their resilience and I wanted to write a story that would honour their strength and hope for a better future.

Many of my social work colleagues worked on the film as actors and crew. Many of the members of the groups that helped out on the project, have experienced homelessness and that has added a huge sense of community to the making of the film.

Most of our scenes were set in St Kilda, Melbourne, which has a high street homeless population, so we were literally shooting in lanes and alleyways where people live!

Q: Lastly, what are some small or large, impactful things we can do by ourselves and as a community to help those in need?

A: Homelessness is such a deep-rooted issue that it often feels like a single small action will make no difference, but if everyone acts, we’ll then have a million small actions and that’s incredibly powerful.

My mantra is; “you do what you can”. Sometimes it can be as simple as engaging (if you feel it’s safe) with someone who is experiencing street homelessness. That engagement might be as a smile or a hello. It can be just informing yourself more about the reality of how some people don’t have the luxury of secure housing, and the impact that this has not only on them but on the entire community.

I strongly believe in the power of story and encourage people to watch SOME HAPPY DAY. Perhaps consider hosting a fundraising screening in your local community…  Because stories open your heart and that’s where change begins!

We’d love to say a warm thank you to Catherine Hill.

SOME HAPPY DAY will debut on SBS On Demand on August 1 and will be available on the SOME HAPPY DAY website from August 8.
